Veeam SureBackup – DC starts in safe mode

October 7, 2016 0 By Allan Kjaer

I have customer using Veeam Backup & Replication, and they are using SureBackup for backup verfication.

After upgrading version 9.0 with update 2, there verification of the Domain Controllers started to fail on check of "DNS", "Domain Controller", and "Global Catalogs" (TCP port connection check).

After some searching i found this Community forum thread, that has a solution: https://forums.veeam.com/veeam-backup-replication-f2/surebackup-dc-starts-in-safe-mode-t37064.html

The problem is that Veeam has changed some DC recovery logic in v9 Update 2, which affected DC recovery in isolated SureBackup environment.

the solution is to set a registry key in domain controller.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication] "UseGranularBcdRestore"=dword:00000000

The registry value reverts the behavior back (for restore points created after editing registry), so should help in such cases.

I have tested this at some customers, and it works.

I hope Veeam will fix this in the next version, so we don't have to set registry keys in the domain controllers.

Update (October 14, 2016):

Alexander Fogelson (Veeam) writes in the forum that this will be change back to how it worked before update 2, and if you have set this registry, you don't need delete it or anything.
